DISPOSABLE TROCARS
Disposable trocars are the trocars most commonly used on our surgical
service and in North America. The newest generation or bladeless trocars
are far superior to the re-usable trocars but remain more expensive.
Although we remain partial to the
AutoSuture or USSC trocars, there are several companies with similar
commercial products.

The major advantages of these trocars are the ease of use, the
availability of bladeless trocars or VersaStep System ™ and the built-in
universal seal. Again the size of the trocars ranges from 2 mm to 15 mm.
There are short and long [for bariatric procedures] variations. The most
significant attribute of these trocars is the negligible leak rate and a
extraordinary reliability. The only critique one would have is the lack
of a good grip [on the abdominal wall] of the sheath of the VersaStep™
Trocar.

This trocar has an elegant transparent casing and no built-in universal
seal. The best attribute of this device is a good grip on the abdominal
wall. The most significant problem is an excessive, unacceptable, leak
rate.
